Sheep of Over-Amstel
Our sheep
Sheep in the polder
In the meadows of Over-Amstel Boerderij, you’ll find Texel sheep – a heritage Dutch breed that has been part of our landscape for over a century.
For generations, sheep played a vital role in mixed farming. Their meat and milk nourished families, their manure kept the soil fertile, and their grazing maintained open grasslands along rivers and dikes, including the Amstel. Today, they still fulfil that role. Their manure enriches our fields and feeds the soil life. It also attracts countless insects, which in turn provide a rich food source for young birds in the polder.
The strength of wool
Texel sheep are hardy, low-maintenance animals that often raise two lambs at a time. Their role extends beyond the pasture. They help keep the polder landscape open and diverse, creating space for black-tailed godwits, lapwings and other meadow birds.
We use part of their wool in our kitchen garden as a natural fertiliser, ensuring nothing goes to waste. Our sheep are not only a peaceful sight in the early morning mist, but also living links in an age-old cycle of people, animals and nature.
