Barnevelders bring life and character
The Barnevelder is known for its calm and friendly nature, making it a perfect fit for our grounds. Curious and social, they’re always nearby, eager to see what’s going on. Our chickens are true foragers – happily scratching in the sheep barn, turning over the soil and searching for insects and other tasty finds.
They rarely fly, so a low fence is often enough to keep them together. They thrive in sunlight and fresh air, visibly enjoying the freedom to roam. From soft clucking to a curious head peeking out at passing feet, their presence brings a warm and easy charm to the yard. The chickens at Over-Amstel Boerderij are right at home, adding to their simple, endearing appeal.
Foraging heritage
Our Barnevelders are a true treasure on the farm. Their plumage is unique: each feather has a rich chestnut-brown base with a dark, almost black edge. This double-laced pattern creates an elegant play of colour, visible even as they busily forage. In the morning sun, their feathers shine more vividly, while their gentle clucking and inquisitive movements bring the yard to life.
Alongside their beauty, they are reliable layers. Did you know they gift us around 150 to 200 eggs each year? Their eggs are large, with a deep brown shell. Even through the winter months, our Barnevelders continue to lay with steady rhythm. So you can enjoy fresh eggs from the polder almost all year round.
This combination of beauty, calm nature and practical value is what makes our chickens so special. At Over-Amstel Boerderij, they bring not just atmosphere to our grounds, but a touch of living heritage. An essential part of our farm.

Het Over-Amstel Boerderij team laat met alle liefde zien wat hun vakgebied inhoudt. Je kunt bijvoorbeeld samen met onze chef Herb de smaken van de polder én het seizoen ontdekken. En onze kaasmaakster Dewi? Zij leert je graag de kneepjes van het vak.
