Dual-purpose cows

Our cows

Robust, purposeful and rooted in the polder

One of the breeds that live at Over-Amstel Boerderij is the Maas-Rijn-IJssel, or MRIJ for short. This heritage Dutch dual-purpose breed has long belonged on the fertile lands along the major rivers.

It combines solid milk production, rich in protein and fat, with excellent meat quality. The milk forms the base for our Over-Amstel cheeses, while the meat is known for its flavour and the fine balance between muscle and fat. Because MRIJ cows are hardy, resilient and self-sufficient, they maintain a healthy weight without the need for concentrated feed. That makes the breed valuable not only to us, but also to the polder and to the future.

Healthy soil and biodiversity

MRIJ cows are calm, gentle animals with a long lifespan. With their red-and-white coats, broad heads and powerful build, they are a recognisable presence in the landscape. But their value goes beyond milk and meat.

As large grazers, they help keep the soil healthy and strengthen biodiversity. Their grazing patterns create variation in the landscape, allowing insects, meadow birds and wildflowers to flourish. In this way, our cows form a natural link in managing the polder ecosystem.

At Over-Amstel Boerderij, we choose MRIJ because this breed fits seamlessly with our vision of circular farming. It is robust, sustainable and deeply connected to the nature and heritage of the Duivendrecht polder.
