History

The Duivendrechtse Polder near Amsterdam has a rich history. Initially, it was a marshland, and the first farms were built in the 12th century after monks and local farmers 'impoldered' the area. These pioneers constructed dikes and drainage channels to drain the marshland, creating fertile farmland that still benefits us at Over-Amstel Boerderij today.

In the 16th and 17th centuries, agriculture in the Duivendrechtse Polder became increasingly intensive, and the farms grew accordingly. Many farms during this period were so-called 'longhouse farms', where the living quarters and the barn were combined under one roof. One practical advantage of this design was the efficient organisation of livestock and storage space.

Over-Amstel Boerderij was built in 1894 on the embankment on the east side of the Amstel. Before that time, agricultural buildings already existed on the property. It is a robust farmhouse with a wide front house, typical of 19th-century farm architecture. Behind it were the workspaces and hayloft. The dormer window is also a notable element. The farmhouse features unique ceiling paintings and a rich interior, which aligns with the area's characteristic history, with wealthy families moving from the city to the Amstelland countryside.

Nowadays, we welcome visitors to Over-Amstel Boerderij, encouraging them to discover what the farm and its surroundings have to offer. The historical front house has been converted into a boutique B&B, and the farm now includes a vegetable garden, a cheese factory and a farm-to-fork restaurant. Respecting our history, we hope to inspire your future.
